After laser eye surgery, our patients tell us they notice things about their surroundings they haven’t seen in a long time—or ever. We thought it would be wise, then, to give them (and you) our top picks: 5 things to see in Detroit after LASIK. What better time to soak it all in than after you’ve vastly improved your vision?
So, here are 5 of our faves, but note: Because the COVID-19 situation is constantly evolving, we recommend contacting any establishment before your visit to check their operational status and current hours.
- Guardian Building. With its art deco design, lavish décor and soaring, three-story ceiling, Detroit’s Guardian building lives up to its reputation as a must-see downtown destination. Businesses leasing space in the circa-1929 structure enjoy truly unique architectural features and, in the top floors, sweeping views of the city. For the rest of us, there’s the jaw-dropping peek inside from the lobby and guided tours inside. 500 Griswold Street, Detroit.
- Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum. One doesn’t even have to go inside to revel in the alive-ness of this city gem. The museum’s eye-popping installations stretch for nearly a block, with countless thousands of beads artistically arranged to impress. 6559 Grand River Avenue, Detroit.
- Heidelberg Project. You can marvel at this East Side art installation without leaving your car for the perfect social-distanced outing. Take a drive by the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood and take in multiple homes festooned with an array of paintings, knickknacks, fixtures and more. Heidelberg Street, Detroit.
- Motown Museum. At last check, this piece of Motor City history was scheduled to reopen January 31. It’s the place where musical magic was made under the creative genius of Berry Gordy Jr., who’s “Motown Sound” launched musical artists such as Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5 and so many more. 2648 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit.
- Motawi Tileworks. Nawal Motawi handcrafts art tile and tiles for industrial and commercial installations that must be seen to be appreciated. Her custom tile creations and murals grace spaces from the University of Michigan-Dearborn to the Ann Arbor District Library to Rob Fleming Park and beyond. See her work up close at her Ann Arbor shop (currently only two can enter at one time by appointment, and only for 30 minutes at a time). If you’re not able to snag an in-person spot, you can still browse online (Motawi.com) to purchase vibrant tiles you simply can’t get anywhere else. 170 Enterprise Drive, Ann Arbor.
