Shabbir Khambati, M.D.
Our Story …
As a boy Shabbir Khambati had a close relationship with his grandfather. Shabbir’s grandfather was afflicted with an eye disease called macular degeneration and he became visually impaired. Remembering his grandfather’s struggles, Shabbir decided he wanted to help patients maintain good visual health. This inspired Shabbir to pursue medical training in ophthalmology, the only surgical field in medicine that would allow him to fulfill that goal.
With hard work and determination Shabbir Khambati, having completed his ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute in 2001, is now Shabbir Khambati, M.D. Prior to completing his residency, Dr. Khambati in good faith made a verbal agreement with a local ophthalmologist to join his established practice. Under this agreement Dr. Khambati and his wife Shabnam were to work together at the practice and buy it out over time. The Khambatis had a personal desire to perform community work before joining the practice they traveled to rural areas of India where Dr. Khambati performed over 1,000 free cataract surgeries.
When Dr. Khambati and Shabnam returned from India eager to start their future in ophthalmology, they contacted the doctor about joining the practice. Unfortunately, he decided not to sell the practice and he rescinded the offer. They were devastated. Dr. Khambati was unemployed. Shabnam had left her position with a pediatric endocrinologist to care for their two-year old daughter Alisha and her ailing mother-in-law. Dr. Khambati sought out positions with local hospitals and ophthalmology practices to no avail. Since he had a wife and small child to support, he went to work for three different optical offices just to make ends meet.
During this time, Dr. Khambati’s father offered him a small space in the corner of his dental practice so he could start building his ophthalmology practice. The space was so small that the eye exam room didn’t have a door and there was only enough room for two patients in the lobby. That small space and long hours working with his wife was enough to give them a foundation to build a thriving ophthalmology practice and optical dispensary. In two short years the business became so successful that the Khambatis were able to move into their own Clinton Township office. Today, by the grace of God, there are three Lake Lazer Eye Center locations.
The Khambatis faced several challenges at the beginning, however their mission has always remained the same: excellent eye health care with the best technology. They will never forget those that helped them achieve this goal, especially the loyal patients from the Clinton Township practice. It is that appreciation for patient loyalty that keeps them humble, caring and trustworthy healthcare providers.

Shabnam -- Administrator
I absolutely love and respect the work I do at our practice. “HELPING PEOPLE SEE BETTER”. It makes you feel good inside!!
After graduating from Oakland University with a degree in Biology, I forewent further studies in medicine to become a part of Lake Lazer Eye Center which opened in 2001. It’s going to be almost 13 years in practice and I’m still tolerated by Dr. Khambati and my colleagues. “Slacker” is the name given to me by them when I’m not at work. Like any typical woman, I sob over romantic movies, pretend to work out doing yoga and enjoy eating dessert with EVERY meal! Being a type A and married to Dr. Khambati, a classic type B personality, for 18 years now, life is always filled with adventure. He is my best friend and my rock of Gibraltar. We are blessed with a 15 year daughter Alisha, a typical teenager who thinks she’s always right and is reaffirmed by her dad too. She is the love of our lives. By God’s grace my life feels complete with my family and a great support from my patients.
From being a receptionist, an optician and surgical coordinator to being a laser operator and office manager, I’ve done it all to help my husband build a successful practice. Our mission has ALWAYS been to make patients our number one priority. Our patients are an integral part of our professional success. Without them we would not exist.
Tracy -- Office Manager/Ophthalmic Technician
I am a single gal from a small Irish/Italian family and we are all very close. I have a large group of friends who let me be the “fun” auntie to their kids. I also am the proud dog mama of Mia, a rescue dog that is just the sweetest girl ever. I started in ophthalmology 23 years ago while in college to become a CPA. With my business background, I started learning more about the ophthalmic business. I found the eyes very interesting and started taking classes to become a ophthalmic technician. I have worked in every aspect of ophthalmology and still after 23 years find it very interesting and satisfying. I enjoy working at Lake Lazer Eye Center because of the personal care and interest in the patients Dr. Khambati has. This office is very family driven and that is a rarity in the days of large medical practice driven thinking.
Florence -- Insurance Billing Manager
My name is Flo. I have been married to a wonderful Italian chef/musician for 20 years. In my free time I enjoy jigsaw puzzles and reading. I have been doing the billing at Lake Lazer Eye Center for a little over 10 years now. Prior to working here I did accounting for the Detroit News for 16 years. I enjoy working with numbers and the challenge of making everything balance at the end of the day. Over the years the Khambati’s have become family to me. It is a pleasure to work with their practice.
Ermal -- Head Ophthalmic Technician
Hello my name is Ermal. I am originally from Albania and have been in the US for 14 years. I attend Oakland University and I am almost finished with a degree in health sciences. I have been working at Lake Lazer Eye Center as the head ophthalmic technician for almost 4 years. I enjoy working here and learning from a great doctor like Dr. Khambati. What I like most about my job is the medical side of the eye including diseases and medications for each particular disease. I enjoy the patient interactions and those patients who I have built a relationship with. I also like my job because I get to follow each particular disease and I enjoy the feeling I get from making a patient see better.
Holly -- Ophthalmic/Laser Technician
Hello, I’m Holly. I’ve been a certified laser technician for the last 16 years. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and in my spare time I like to watch movies, have garage sales, do crossword puzzles and cuddle with my cat. My role at Lake Lazer Eye Center involves performing the necessary testing of patient’s eyes prior to seeing Dr. Khambati and calibrating and programming the lasers for LASIK surgery. I also assist in answering calls and making appointments. I enjoy speaking to his vast “family” of patients who have been seeing him for the last 13 years, as well as welcoming his new ones. From the provisions of the latest advancements of technological equipment to the highest standards in quality of care from one of the leading ophthalmologists in the state of Michigan, I am truly blessed to be a part of the Lake Lazer Eye Center team. What I like most about working here is the atmosphere with which the guidance and direction of our management, Dr. Khambati and my colleagues all provide to being the best team I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
Sue -- Optician/LASIK Coordinator
I am a wife and mother of two teenagers. I love spending time traveling with my family experiencing other countries’ cultures and food. I am a former Pastry Chef and love to cook and bake for my family and friends in my “spare” time (HaHa). I have been with Lake Lazer Eye Center for 3 1/2 years now. I have had the opportunity to grow in my position here and have had multiple positions with the company. I work as an Office Assistant, an Ophthalmological Technician, and I also assist in the billing department. The best part of my job is the day to day interaction with my patients and knowing that we are making a difference in their lives.
Mary -- Head Front Desk Coordinator
Hi I’m Mary, I have 3 children Tyler 19, Malik 13, and Hailey Rose who is 12 going on 18. They play many sports and I so enjoy watching them and cheering them on. THEY ARE MY WORLD!!!! I have worked at Lake Lazer Eye Center for the past 3 years. I enjoy working at our fast paced, family oriented office. Working the front desk we have multiple tasks, greeting patients, making appointments, and millions of other things to keep our office running smoothly. My family and I have been patients of Dr. Khambati’s for years, so not only do I trust him professionally, but also as a patient.
Kierstyn -- Media Manger/Front Desk Coordinator
Hello! I am a Lasik, Media and Marketing Coordinator for Lake Lazer Eye Center. I also help manage the front desk as a receptionist for Dr. Khambati and manage the front desk for the Kresge Eye Institute associates. I love my job and helping patients with their needs. I graduated from Oakland University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and I am currently attending OU to obtain my Masters Degree in Public Administration. I love the great outdoors and going up north. I am a passionate Red Wings fan and love to travel. I am extremely close with my family and my dogs are my loves. My favorite part about working at Lake Lazer Eye Center is on LASIK surgery days. It is so rewarding to be part of a life changing moment and knowing that when a patient walks out they will no longer need glasses is PRICELESS.
Heather -- Head Optician/Marketing Manager
I am a Southern gal at heart but have lived in Michigan for just over 20 years now and still can’t drive in the snow! I am Mom to a 18 year old teenage son “artistic type” who dreams of being a drummer in a band someday. I got my start in the optical field when I decided I wanted a M-F office job where I could dress up instead of waiting on tables in a restaraunt. I went to a placement agency and with no experience, those jobs were hard to get. They had an opening in an optical lab putting glasses together all day long. That particular job was not very exciting, but I soon realized the optical field itself was exciting and there was much to learn. 19 years later it is still exciting and I am still learning. What I love most about my job here at Lake Lazer Eye Center is the way a pair of glasses can make such a difference not only in how you see, but how people see you.
Keisha -- LASIK/Cosmetic/Front Desk Coordinator
Hi! I’m Keisha, one of the LASIK & Cosmetic Coordinators for Lake Lazer Eye Center. After spending over 15 years working for large companies, I decided it was time for a change. Dr. Khambati and Lake Lazer Eye Center are that change. The family owned practice and the family environment give me the opportunity to provide patients with the personal attention they deserve. I enjoy interacting with the patients and look forward to development of these relationships.
Macie -- Front Desk Coordinator
Hi. My name is Macie and I’m 21 years old. I love to help people in any way possible. I am very family oriented, which is why I like working with the Khambati’s. They have great relationships with our patients and treat them all with such kindness. I like that! Currently, I work at the front desk where I get to be hands on with the patients; which is my favorite part about my job. I’m also very interested in other aspects of the practice, such as LASIK, Optical and Rejuvapen.
